The Sharpe Gallery

~ We had a nice couple in today who said, "What a lovely little gem of a gallery." I wish I'd remember to write down every comment like this one so I could share it! ~

~ Those who are familiar with The Sharpe Gallery know that if you want to see art in the Kennebunkport area that goes beyond the nautical theme - "something different" - this is the place to visit. The gallery does exhibit representational coastal scenes of Maine, but there are also many other styles of artwork. This is why you'll also find artwork of European scenes. And we have one of the most talented artists - Richard Yeager! His demonstration on August 27th was well-received by artists and art enthusiasts. Not only is Yeager a fine painter, but he's a well-spoken and intelligent instructor - not to mention his great sense of humor. ~

~ There was a fantastic turnout at The Sharpe Gallery for Linda Murray's artist reception last night. If you missed the show, you can plan to see Linda Murray on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 1-5pm. We are holding the third-annual participatory demonstration at the gallery. Linda provides the supplies and walks you through creating a piece of art based on her techniques. Murray is a popular abstract artist from Maine with many followers since she's been exhibiting at The Sharpe Gallery. So, we enjoy hosting this free-to-the-public event. ~

~ We're here at The Sharpe Gallery today curating it for Linda Murray's art exhibit, "Off the Wall" that will run for four weeks. Artist reception is Saturday, July 23rd from 5-7pm. Murray's description of this body of work is, "My work in 'Off the Wall' may seem just that, a little off the wall. But, if you go deeper than that you may see more of what is intended. I wish to take the viewer from the concrete world into a world of fancy and myth, one of pure imagination. A painting should pose questions that release the power of the viewer’s creative imagination, that allow the viewer to look in a new way. I can’t do this until I see in a new way and this is the struggle of the artist." ~

~ The weather in Southern Maine is a bit dreary and wet to be at the beach or poolside - but a fantastic one for visiting art galleries! Wonderful visitors from Brazil and Argentina, who come to New England annually to visit friends in Boston, just came into the gallery. This is their first trip to Maine. Talking with them allowed for me to reminisce about my trip to Buenos Aires I took years ago. We had such a great conversation that they said they're going to plan to come to the gallery every year during their New England visit! ~

~ Yesterday, artist Michael Guinane was at The Sharpe Gallery! Wow! I just want to thank everyone for stopping in to chat with Michael about his creative techniques and what inspires his genre paintings. His style is so unique that one visitor/collector said, "When you look at that painting, you know it's a Guinane." In addition to such great talent, Michael is a nice person to get to know. He's very open and welcoming, with a fun, laid-back personality. He's so easy going that he makes everyone he meets feel comfortable. Michael is very approachable and remarkably talented, so if you missed his event this year, please know The Sharpe Gallery will have him back again next spring! In 2017, we're planning an evening artist reception for his exhibit of new artwork, followed by a casual afternoon with Michael at the gallery the following day. Don't miss the upcoming art gallery events - email us at info@TheSharpeGallery.com and ask to be on our mailing list. ~

~ What a fantastic start to the season's first Village Art Walk! There were so many people out in Kennebunkport and Kennebunk Lower Village. The Sharpe Gallery was nonstop with folks stopping in to see the new artwork on display. I lost count of visitors sometime after the 40th person! If you wish you had been out doing the same, don't worry because we're actually holding another art walk this month! It's a special art walk because next weekend is our area's Maritime Festival - LAUNCH! Stop in at the art gallery Friday, June 17th from 5-7pm! ~

~ Memorial Day ended on a high note. It was one of remembrance of those who gave their lives to protect my freedom, followed by a busy day at The Sharpe Gallery of meeting new people, a visit by Victoria Lloyd and Portland Press Herald journalist, Bob Keyes, and an unexpected day trip to Maine by my good friend, Gina. She helped me close out the day. We really enjoyed a conversation we had with a young couple from Boston - millennials get a bad rap, but they did not fit that stereo type. It's nice to meet young people who have an appreciation for art. ~

~ Another busy day at The Sharpe Gallery. Some of the best moments are meeting new people. It's not unusual for Kennebunkport or any part of Maine to get visitors from Texas, so I wasn't surprised to meet some today at the gallery. Cathy and her daughter Abby were immediately drawn to paintings by artist, Pamela Hetherly. Pam has an interesting life before her career as an artist. She is retired now, but was a doctor and an engineer. Hetherly has been part of The Sharpe Gallery since its opening in 2011 and it has been amazing to watch her grow as an artist. Her art career started in 2005 with courses at the University of Maine, Orono, University of Augusta, and many workshops, including a four-week course in Italy with Connie Hayes. Over the past 5 years, I've watched her artwork go from a tight representational style - something I like to think comes from her engineering background - to one of a loose, impressionistic style. ~

~ What a beautiful day in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Cape Porpoise...and I'm sure elsewhere in Maine! It's been so busy in The Sharpe Gallery today that I'm finally getting a second to take a break. There's a lot of new work in the art gallery. If you're a new art collector or a seasoned art collector, there's something for everyone. Everyone knows I like abstract art, and certainly have a lot of that on exhibit. But also know it's important to show what people come to Maine to see - the ocean vistas, boats sailing off to light houses, and other maritime genres. Let's not forget, though, people come to The Sharpe Gallery because they know they'll see something different! Fine art with an edge... ~

~ It brings me pleasure to bring together an artist and a lover of art. I just received the following message: "Hi Tracey --- you may remember we bought a few paintings this past summer at your gallery, we're from Lexington, KY. Please let us know of new works by Michael Guinane, as we are buying a new house that has lots of wall space...We love his horse paintings that we purchased last summer, and enjoy them every day. Hope you are doing well, it was so nice to meet you, and... find your wonderful gallery. Christina"

There will be new Guinane paintings when he arrives for his show on Saturday, June 11th from 12-6pm. Three years ago, Michael and I discovered that his presence at the gallery during the day is fun, low-key, and ample time for visitors to have a chance to meet and chat with him. Plus, we get to rib each other about football. It's all good. ~

~ Gallery customers from Bethesda, MD attended Saturday night's benefit event in DC and this is a message I received from them. "Thank you so much for inviting us to your pop-up art show. The pieces were lovely, and the people were wonderful. (And those milk shakes!!!) But seeing you was the highlight. It’s always a pleasure to spend time together. Please send us more information about the piece that we are considering when you have a chance. But don’t feel you need to do so... before you return from Paris. I am so happy that you will be there in May, one of the best times I think." Everything about starting this fine arts gallery business has been rewarding - but some of the most special moments have been meeting the people along the way. ~

~ Sharpe Gallery customers from DC graciously opened their home for a pop-up art charity event benefiting Communities in Schools of the Nation's Capital. The Sharpe Gallery was honored to be chosen to showcase its gallery artists' artwork and to donate a percentage of sales to this meaningful cause. ~

~ Five years ago Easter, I decided to open an art gallery. A month later, the gallery was open. "The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Anais Nin ~

~ Happy New Year from The Sharpe Gallery! May 2016 be filled with love, prosperity, good health, and fine art! ~

~ The Sharpe Gallery Santa made a delivery to our hard-working team at Mail-It Unlimited in Kennebunk, Maine. I'm not much of a cook, but I enjoy baking. They loved my home-made brownies so much last year that they threatened not to ship The Sharpe Gallery art unless I made more for them. So, I didn't make them as tasty this year. (wink, wink) If you ever have a need for shipping your fine art or other items, we highly recommend them. They know they're business! If they can ship valuable, fine art with utmost quality and care, then they can ship anything! Thanks Bill, Tim, and the rest of the crew! Merry Christmas! ~

~ While in Portland last night, I thought of DC customers of mine who recently bought a second home there. And no sooner do I open The Sharpe Gallery today do they walk in! I love this couple and was so happy to see them. I also wasn't sure I would be taking my annual trip to DC this spring. But now, after spending almost two hours chatting with them, I definitely have to plan a trip. One of the best aspects of owning an art gallery are the people who come in and with whom I subsequently develop a friendship. ~

~ We are so thrilled to have our new business sign up in time for Kennebunkport's Christmas Prelude! It's almost as beautiful as the fine art in The Sharpe Gallery! ~

Saturday, November 28, 2015

~ Let's get into the spirit of the holidays! The Sharpe Gallery is open today from 10am-5pm with new artwork on display and serving up some holiday refreshments! Come on by and register to win a $100 gift certificate to The Sharpe Gallery! ~

Saturday, November 21, 2015

~ In a recent storm, The Sharpe Gallery business sign was blown off, but we're still here! We are working diligently to have it replaced in time for the Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude season! We're open today until 5pm. Come on by and say hello and see all the beautiful fine art! ~

Sunday, November 1, 2015

~ We're closed the first week of November. Why? Because it's my birthday week and it's time to celebrate life! I'm off to London for a little R&R, afternoon tea, and visits to museums and art galleries. See you soon! ~

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

~ Please join us this Friday, October 9th from 5-8pm during the Village Art Walk. Artist Susan Paradis will be painting at the gallery. ~

Friday, September 4, 2015

~ While we're in the Berkshires, good friend, Gina Kieslich, will be at the gallery welcoming visitors. Now, that's a great friend who gives up a holiday weekend so we can enjoy time away! You may recognize her as a regular gallery and artist reception patron. Come by and say hello to Gina! She knows Kennebunkport and The Sharpe Gallery very well so will be able to help you. ~

~ A reocurring comment from gallery visitors is, "You have a very nice collection here. Although we enjoy seeing local scenes of Kennebunkport, the Maine Islands, and other parts of Maine, it's refreshing to see other type of art work too. We like that your art gallery is different from the other galleries." ~

~ "It's a beautiful day to wind down after the Gallery's Season-opening event last night! The gallery was buzzing with artists, friends, smiling tourists, and Kennebunk residents. They met the painters of the colored scenes that immersed them, and entertained conversation with a little wine and a lot of laughter. There is no better way to celebrate great art than with great company." Hannah Tardie, Sharpe Gallery Assistant ~

~ "When you create from the heart, and put those creations out into the world for others to see – opportunities arise. The path forward becomes clear. The universe tells you what it wants next. It’s a ‘calling’ of sorts – a whisper that grows into an insistent scream through passion and continual artistic action." Eric Taubert – Barometer Media ~

~ We're loving this time of year in the Kennebunks! It's not as crowded in town and that brings out the people who enjoy our beautiful coastal community without the hustle and bustle of summer vacationers. They love that the local shops and art galleries are still open. New Jersey visitors at the gallery today said they have time to enjoy everything a little more; the pace is quieter and slower - more relaxing. ~

~A lovely couple, Robin and Dominic, who are from Rhode Island and have a summer home in Southern Maine just popped into the gallery. They were intrigued by the colorful abstract art by Linda Murray displayed in the window. When asking me what my winter hours will be, I told them I would be closed the first week of November because it's my birthday week and I'm celebrating. They smiled and said it's their anniversary week. They're celebrating by dining at The White Barn Inn. I returned the smile and said, I'm doing the same! ~

~ “If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.” Marc Chagall ~ I love this quote because I can feel the difference when artwork was produced only from the head - even if it is a well-excuted composition. There's something missing, the soul perhaps, when the heart and the depth of the artist's being wasn't involved. ~

~ It's the last Saturday in October and it's a beautiful one here in Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, and Cape Porpoise! The sun is shining after many days of rain and heavy winds. We're looking forward to seeing many seacoast visitors and residents out and about, enjoying the sunshine and fine art galleries! ~

~ Gallery artists, Jody Regan and Francine Schrock donated a painting to benefit Crossroads. Tonight was their 2nd Annual Gala. "Crossroads provides gender-responsive addiction and behavioral health treatment services in a safe and respectful environment so individuals and families can lead healthy lives." Thank you Jody and Francine. Other gallery artists have donated works of art to different charities. I'm not always able to attend each event, so I was happy to have made this one and grateful to represent artists who support charities. Jody donated a beautiful painting of two sail boats. She has a lovely painterly style of visible brushstrokes and texture. Francine's abstract piece also has visable texture. I'm very fond of her abstract artwork, but she's also very talented in painting figures, landscapes, seascapes and more. ~

~ The Sharpe Gallery just received a nice e-mail message from our customers in DC who had a private function here at the gallery last Saturday night. For the long weekend, they invited 25 guests and rented one home in Kennebunkport, another in Cape Porpoise and had a fantastic time in Southern Maine during one of the prettiest times of the year! "The event went over very well. Your help coordinating with the caterers that day, running out to get forks, and managing the other logistics let me visit with everyone. I can't think of any improvements. Everyone commented how nice the evening was and how much they enjoyed meeting you." ~

~ The art gallery is nearly half way through its fourth season and it's been a successful year thus far! The summer season in Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, and the surrounding areas has come to a close, but there is still plenty to see and do. There are new art galleries popping up in town, making this area an even greater destination for art collectors and enthusiasts! ~
